The 1966-67 Wildcats of Mississippi Hall of Fame Coach Bob Tyler was the most dominant high school football team in Mississippi during the 1960s. MHS won two Big 8 Championships, and two State Championships and was ranked No. 5 nationally by Scholastic Roto magazine over the two-year period.
The Wildcats won 20 games with no defeats and only one tie, including a 34-0 victory over Provine and a 24-7 win over Biloxi in the Big 8 Championship games.
Offensively, Meridian averaged thirty-two points per game, while only allowing 4.6 points per game during the 1966-67 seasons, including shutting out their opponents eleven times. Over 20 players from these squads advanced to play college football.
It was not unusual for Ray Stadium to be packed during this time with crowds reaching 15,000 — so many that bleachers were brought in for end zone seating for the overflow crowds.
Players and coaches who were honored on the field at halftime of the Wildcats' game against Oak Grove on Friday, October 6, 2023, were: Coach Charles Garrett, Coach Don Evans, Coach Carlos McComb, Coach Doug Marshall, Grady Coleman, Joe Luina, George Ranager, Buster Boatner, Danny Knight, Sam McCorkle, Steve, Parker, Randy Ethridge, Monte Royal, Morris Stamm, and Mayo “Shot” Sykes.
