MHS Sports Roundup: Boys Doubles dominates in season opener
The Meridian High School Tennis team began its season with a match against Wayne County High School.
The MHS #1 and #2 Boys Doubles teams both picked up wins.
#1 Boys Doubles Kayden Brooks and William Dickerson won 6-0,6-0
#2 Boys Doubles Carter Williams and Gavan Aron won 7-6, 6-2
Boys Singles: Shacobe Rush fell just a few points short in a tiebreaker with a score of 1-6,6-3 (6-10)
The Wildcats lost on the girl's courts (doubles and single) and our mixed doubles court.
The first home match is Thursday, February 15, 2024, at 3 p.m. against Noxubee County.
MHS Softball
MHS 15, Quitman 13
The Lady Wildcat Softball team picked up a thrilling 15-13 win over the Lady Panthers on the road in MHSAA Softball action on Tuesday, February 13, 2024.
Jazlynn Sulton drove in four runs on three hits and picked up the win for the Lady Wildcats. The Lady ‘Cats scored ten runs on four hits in the top of the sixth inning. Demia Warren hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, Malia Hersey singled, scoring one run, Mya Brown singled, scoring two runs, Raenisha Thedford was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, Caitlyn Williams drew a walk, scoring one run, Sulton doubled, scoring three runs, and #00 induced Hersey to hit into a fielder's choice, but one run scored.
Jazlynn Sulton, Mya Brown, Malia Hersey, Caitlyn Williams, Kenbria Jones all had multiple hits for the Lady Wildcats. MHS tallied 12 hits and Quitman collected 11 hits in the high-scoring contest.
MHS travels to Germantown on Thursday and returns home on Friday, February 16, 2024, to host Quitman.

The Wildcat baseball team fell 13-0 to Hattiesburg in MHSAA Baseball action on Tuesday, February 13, 2024. The Wildcats are back in action on Friday, February 16, 2024, when they host Wayne County. J.V. plays at 5 p.m. followed by Varsity at 7 p.m. at Q.V. Sykes Field.
